If you are writing a post on narcissism, you gotta check out thelastpsychiatrist’s ramblings on cultural narcissism. It’s his main shtik (at least before this year) and he is quite insightful.

Freud said that women need narcissism to balance out their masochism. My observations confirmed it – I saw the most narcissism from women around the times of highest emotional pain. Weirdly mixed.

Masochism makes a big emphasis on the ME narrative. It makes sense that it goes by hand with Narcissism. Part of the narcissist personality is playing the victim when their fabrications turn against them, then sucking the emotional energy from their rescuers.
